چکیده

We investigate the perception of phonemic vowel quantity contrast and its relation to word stress and vowel quality in Slovak, and fill the gap of missing experimental perception data for this language. We observe that both prosodicallydriven undershoot of unstressed vowels and the functional load affect the perception of quantity contrast. Vowel quality plays some role in quantity identification for high vowels (/u/ and unstressed /i/) but Slovak seems to retain a robust quantity contrast for all examined vowel qualities.

Effects of lexical stress and speech rate on the quantity and quality of Slovak vowels

We investigate the relationship between vowel quantity and the utilization of formant space in Slovak, and how prosodic variation in speech rate and lexical stress marking affects this relationship. Slovak presents a common five-vowel system with full phonemic quantity contrast for all vowels in all positions. We found that 1) phonemic quantity contrast in Slovak is salient and minimally affect...

Jaw Movement in Vowels and Liquids Forming the Syllable Nucleus

This paper investigates jaw movements in the production of Slovak syllables with and without vowels. We test the hypothesis that /l, r/ in the syllable nucleus position show a degree of jaw opening comparable to vowels, therefore providing a rising-falling sonority profile even in syllables lacking vowels. We also investigate whether the phonemic length distinction occurring for both vowels and...

Phonemic length and phrasal accent in Slovak consonantal and vocalic nuclei

Slovak allows us to compare vowels and consonants (/l/ and /r/) in nuclear position for their implementation of phonemic length contrast in stressed as well as unstressed syllables of accented as well as unaccented words. We analyzed the acoustic data of seven speakers for the changes in the duration of the vocalic and consonantal nuclei induced by phonemic length contrast and phrasal accent fo...

The Effect of Transcribing on Beginning Learners’ Phonemic Perception

A large number of studies dealing with phonology have focused their attention on phonological production at the expense of phonological perception which provides the foundation stone for phonological production. This study focuses on phonological perception at phonemic level. The purpose of the study is helping beginning learners improve their perception of the English phonemes which are confus...

Control of phonemic length contrast and speech rate in vocalic and consonantal syllable nuclei.

This paper investigates the mechanisms controlling the phonemic quantity contrast and speech rate in nonsense p(1)Np(2)a words read by five Slovak speakers in normal and fast speech rate. N represents a syllable nucleus, which in Slovak corresponds to long and short vowels and liquid consonants. The movements of the lips and the tongue were recorded with an electromagnetometry system. Together ...
